What Does A Luxury Kitchen Actually Cost?

6 minute read

At Kitchenality, we are asked nearly every day how much people should expect to spend to get that high-end, luxury kitchen feel. The honest answer is that it depends on far more than simply the size of the space. A luxury kitchen is not a product with a fixed price, and it is impossible to name a figure, as every kitchen we create is so different. Each one is designed to fit our clients’ unique needs, home, and daily life, has unique made-to-measure plans to ensure the best use of space, and the cost reflects the materials, craftsmanship, and care taken at every stage, from the first sketch to the final checks.

This guide explains what actually shapes bespoke kitchen costs in the UK, and what a realistic budget should be before you commit to the process. Just to be clear, this is not a price list. If you would like a quote for your kitchen renovation, we don’t offer off-the-shelf solutions. The best route would be to book a design consultation with our expert team at our showroom in the iconic Arighi Bianchi store in Macclesfield. This guide is to help you understand how high-end kitchen prices are determined so you can plan with confidence and see why it may be better value than you first thought.

What Counts As A Luxury Kitchen?

A luxury kitchen is defined less by a price tag and more by how it is conceived and made. There is no figure or tickbox that deems a kitchen as “luxury” – it is more about how it looks, feels, and functions. Typically, it includes elements like:

  • Cabinetry that is bespoke or made to order, built around your room rather than adapted to fit it
  • Premium materials such as solid timber, hand-finished paint, top-end appliances or quality veneers
  • Considered design, with storage, lighting and layout planned around how you actually live
  • Professional project management and expert installation for a seamless process
  • Aftercare and a supplier who stands behind the finished result

Many UK homeowners investing in a genuinely bespoke kitchen find it challenging to create a budget bracket as the pricing varies so much from small, compact spaces to larger and more complex projects. The right number for your home depends on the factors below.

Where Does The Cost Come From?

Understanding the main cost areas makes it far easier to decide where to invest and where to save. As a rough guide, a high-end kitchen budget typically breaks down as follows.

1. Cabinetry (often the largest share)

Cabinets usually make up the biggest part of the budget. What drives the price:

  • Construction: Quality carcasses, solid timber frames and dovetailed drawer boxes cost more than standard flat-pack or mass-produced units, and they last decades longer.
  • Finish: Hand-painted, spray-finished or specially veneered doors take considerably more skill and time to craft.
  • Bespoke Details: Built-in larders, concealed appliance housings, bar areas, multi-purpose islands and bespoke joinery all add cost, but also add real value in daily use.
  • Hardware: Soft-close hinges, premium drawer systems and well-made handles are small items that you will touch every day and benefit from over the years.

2. Worktops

Worktops are both a practical and a visual decision. Prices vary widely:

  • Quartz and engineered stone offer durability and consistency.
  • Natural stone, such as granite or marble, brings unique character but can need more care.
  • Solid timber adds warmth and can be a striking choice for an island or country-style home.

Thickness, edge profile, number of joins, and any cut-outs for sinks and hobs all affect the final figure. A large island in a rare natural stone can cost many times more than a standard quartz worktop.

3. Appliances

Appliance budgets are often underestimated. A well-chosen set of premium appliances can significantly affect the overall cost. If you need multiple appliances, such as a range cooker or induction hob, integrated fridge-freezer, steam oven, wine storage, dishwasher, washing machine, a boiling water tap, etc, it will undoubtedly be reflected in the overall cost. Decide what you will genuinely use, then invest in those items properly. Most premium appliance brands, like Siemens, which we partner with, offer very generous warranty options, so although the price may seem high at first glance, it is a good investment as you can rest assured that you will not face problems in the future. One thing we particularly appreciate about Siemens appliances is their high quality and reputation as industry leaders in technology, which justifies the initial investment.

4. Design & Planning

A considered design process is where a luxury kitchen is won or lost. It covers layout, lighting, electrics, storage planning and material selection. Good design prevents costly mistakes later and often saves money by ensuring every pound is spent where it counts. This is why a design consultation matters so much, and we come back to it below.

5. Project Management & Installation

Installation is not an afterthought. A high-end kitchen requires skilled fitters, accurate templating, coordinated trades (electricians, plumbers, plasterers, flooring), and careful scheduling. As a guide, kitchen design and installation costs can add a significant percentage to the overall budget, and professional project management keeps the work on time, on budget, and to a consistent standard. Kitchens are the heart of the home, so it is an important investment to ensure delays do not occur and that any challenges are addressed fast and with confidence.

6. The Extras That Are Easy To Forget

It is wise to leave room in your budget for:

  • Electrical and plumbing alterations
  • Flooring, decorating and plastering
  • Lighting design and statement lighting
  • Structural work, such as removing a wall or adding bi-fold doors
  • A contingency of around 10 percent for the unexpected, particularly in older homes

What Makes One Luxury Kitchen Cost More Than Another?

Two kitchens of the same size can have very different budgets. The main variables are:

  • Scale and Layout: More cabinetry, a larger island or a separate pantry increases cost.
  • Complexity: Curved joinery, bespoke panelling or integrated features take longer to design and build.
  • Materials: Solid hardwoods, natural stone and specialist finishes sit at the premium end.
  • Specification of Appliances: Professional-grade equipment varies enormously in price.
  • Property Type: Period homes, listed buildings and properties with awkward access may need additional planning and specialist installation.
  • Location and Timescales: Access, scheduling and the need to coordinate several trades can all influence the overall figure.

Where To Invest & Where To Be Flexible

If you need to manage your budget, be deliberate about where you spend. Invest first in what you touch and rely on every day: cabinet construction, drawers, hinges, and worktops. Put equal weight on design, because a well-planned layout will always outperform an expensive but poorly thought-through one. Another key area is appliances. These are incredibly important during the design and build stage and are not easy to change later, especially built-in elements.

You can be more flexible on finishes that are easy to change later, such as paint colours or decorative accessories. If you want to spread the cost even further, you could also consider phasing the purchase of furniture, such as bar stools and dining tables, and upgrading them later, as long as you plan the spacings correctly from the start.

Is A Luxury Kitchen Worth The Investment?

For many homeowners, a high-end kitchen is the heart of a forever home. It is where daily life, entertaining and family time converge, and quality is felt every day, in the way a drawer closes, the way a surface wears and the way the space flows.

Well-made bespoke cabinetry can last for decades, and a well-designed kitchen is often a strong selling point should you ever move. Think of it less as an expense and more as a long-term investment in how you live.
